In the period from 1847 to 1878, brewer J.C. Jacobsen constructed a grand villa as his private residence. One of the most impressive elements of the project was the magnificent Pompeji Hall, an original winter garden with a column courtyard, created by architect P.C. Bønecke.

In 2019, the Carlsberg Foundation initiated an extensive restoration, including the Pompeji Hall, focusing on revitalizing the room’s atmosphere and function as a setting for scientific symposia and conferences. Architect and lighting designer Marianne Tuxen undertook a comprehensive redesigned lighting, which in its form and function demonstrates deep respect for the hall’s historical and architectural significance.

She designed a pendant in opal glass with a tulip shape, allowing for a high placement due to the shape of the glass, while simultaneously emitting a soft, non-glare, downward-directed light. The pendant was selected as the primary lighting in the column corridor and complemented with a wall version in the Pompeji Hall’s courtyard. Furthermore, a specially designed light tube fixture for the bar area and a portable table lamp with tulip glass were created, adapted for meeting use and other events. The table lamp is designed to operate for up to eight hours on a single charge. All products are manufactured by Okholm Lighting in close collaboration with Marianne Tuxen, and the solution ensures a perfect balance between functional lighting design and the room’s aesthetic expression.
