KROGERUP FOLK HIGH SCHOOL, ESPERGÆRDE, DENMARK.
As part of a major restoration project, architect and lighting designer Marianne Tuxen has developed a new and spectacular chandelier for the stairwell by the beautiful old main staircase. Marianne Tuxen and restoration architect Bente Lange have been behind the project, and Marianne Tuxen has handled the lighting task. The result was an unconventional chandelier consisting of embedded LED strips, strung on circles of brushed brass with a matte finish. Brass was chosen because the material was part of many other details in the rooms. The goal was to create a chandelier that respected the site's historical atmosphere while also serving as a message to the future.
The inspiration for the rings came from the stairs themselves, where both circles and arches are part of the decorative railing. The project has been highly praised, and Marianne Tuxen states: "It is fantastic to work together with Okholm Lighting. I have known them for 10 years, maybe more. Our collaboration is easy and worthy of recommendation to others. They will both listen and contribute with their expertise. It is a perfect unity when we can challenge each other."
Customized Lighting: Modern Chandelier in Brass and LED Strips
Krogerup High School in Espergærde has, as part of a major restoration project, received a new and customized chandelier that both fits the old buildings and incorporates modern elements for the future. Behind the chandelier stand Okholm Lighting from Tønder, as well as architect and lighting designer Marianne Tuxen.
The customized lighting for Krogerup High School was created in collaboration with architect and lighting designer Marianne Tuxen from Tuxen Design, who is responsible for providing proposals for, among other things, lighting and interior design in cooperation with restoration architect Bente Lange:
"As an architect, I have been tasked with creating lighting proposals for the library, large hall, small hall, and foyer at Krogerup High School. It is an exciting task because these are protected buildings, so you can't just make all sorts of holes in the walls," says Marianne Tuxen.
For the old staircase, a new large chandelier has become part of the plans. The solution consists of several floating rings with embedded LED strips, providing an even, white surface. The LED strips are strung on circles of brushed brass with a matte finish:
"I have actually made two proposals for chandeliers. One traditional and one more forward-looking and modern. It is important that it fits the place with the old buildings but at the same time suits a high school that looks forward," she explains and continues:
"Brass has already been used for many other details in the rooms, so it was obvious to continue. And then there are the LED strips, which are quite modern. In the stairwell's railing and balustrade, there are semicircles and rings of different sizes in the wooden structure, which are reflected in the design."
It is fantastic to work together with Okholm Lighting
In the lighting project at Krogerup High School, Marianne Tuxen provides sketches and 3D drawings of the chandelier. Then the dialogue begins about what is possible – and how the design can be combined with the technical aspects. After a few back-and-forth drawings, Okholm Lighting creates construction drawings and starts production:
"It is a very creative process, where Okholm Lighting and I both contribute with our competencies. Although I have designed the chandelier and am involved in approving it along the way, I always get a bit of butterflies in my stomach before I see the product for real," says Marianne Tuxen, and adds the high school's reaction to the chandelier:
"They are completely thrilled about it. They think it is fantastic."
The result thus brings joy and pride to both Krogerup High School, Okholm Lighting, and Marianne Tuxen, who look forward to more projects with Okholm Lighting:
"It is fantastic to work together with Okholm Lighting. I have known them for 10 years or maybe more. Our collaboration is so easy and pleasant," praises Marianne Tuxen of her partners and emphasizes that she continually recommends them to others:
"They are always positive towards suggestions, and it's easy to work with people who are willing to listen. At the same time, they have expertise I don't have and vice versa. It all comes together when we can challenge each other."
Created in Collaboration with a Creative Partner
For Director Peter Okholm from Okholm Lighting, the project with Krogerup High School and architect Marianne Tuxen is a very good example of a solution with customized lighting, which is most often created with a creative partner:
"Customized lighting is usually developed by an artist or designer. Often a sketch comes, which we then put into context – into a room," explains Peter Okholm and continues:
"We investigate how it physically connects. Can it be built? How can we run wires? What type of light should and can it provide? We basically look at all the technical aspects, and together we find a solution."
Typically, architects request customized solutions from Okholm Lighting. Director Peter Okholm says that customized lighting is especially for those who want to leave their own mark on the project:
"We started by delivering customized lighting in churches, but now we also deliver to private builders. It can be for entrance areas, boardrooms, or restaurants. It is often for a decorative purpose."
