BUGÅRDEN CHURCH

BUGÅRDEN KIRKE, SANDEFJORD, NORWAY

In collaboration with architect Helene Hov from Kvartal 19, Okholm Lighting has developed a special luminaire for Bugården Church in Norway. The ambition was to create a luminaire that both atmospherically illuminates the church space and contributes to highlighting small architectural details.

The result is a large light ring that provides decorative warm (2700K) lighting, clearly bringing the ceiling's details into the room's atmosphere. This primarily serves the atmospheric lighting and consists of over 300 LED printed panels that contribute to the illumination. The more functional, downward-directed lighting, yet still contributing to the atmosphere, is delegated to suspended pendants. The pendants' light sources are chosen for their very high color rendering. This dual solution achieves flexibility regarding functionality, allowing functional lighting to be increased and dimmed for practical reasons while maintaining atmosphere-creating lighting regardless of the functionally chosen light intensity.

Bugården Church: Consulting Should Lead to the Best Possible Solution

Okholm Lighting has many years of experience with church lighting and understands the importance of lighting that creates the perfect atmosphere. Therefore, Director Peter Okholm and his colleagues from Okholm Lighting are also happily participating in the Norwegian project alongside architect Helene Hov from Kvartal 19.

The project at Bugården Church has been about developing something unique that both creates the perfect atmosphere and illuminates the church space in a way that highlights the small details.

"The architect wanted a large light ring in the church space, with the pendants in the ceiling hanging down from the ring. We had a back-and-forth dialogue and concluded that, in terms of lighting alone, it was a bad idea," explains Director Peter Okholm about the project.
Focus on Atmosphere and Technical Consulting

At Okholm Lighting, this dialogue is extremely important. In the role of technical advisor, it's about realizing ideas in the best possible way:

"We look at the technical side. The architect's sketch is put into context. How does it physically connect? What about the dimensions? Can it even be built, and can we run wires and fittings? We look at how we can make everything fit together," explains Peter Okholm about what needs to be considered in a tailored project.
"At the same time, we need to know how much light the specific lighting is expected to emit. If the lighting is primarily decorative, the light is secondary, and there will be other lighting that illuminates," he adds.
Collaboration between Helene Hov from Kvartal 19 and Okholm Lighting Naturally Led to a Good Solution:

"Instead, it has ended up that we exclusively create lighting to create an atmosphere in the church. This way, you can turn pendants and the light ring on and off separately," says Peter about the collaboration with Helene Hov and Bugården Church.
High Color Rendering and Warm Color Temperature

In all lighting projects, the technical aspect and functionality naturally play a significant role. In Bugården Church, LED printed panels, which Okholm Lighting manufactures themselves, have become a central part of the solution.

"In the pendants, it’s LED bulbs. In the ring, it’s also LED, but on small printed panels that illuminate. Printed panels are small plates with yellow squares on them, which are LEDs. They are about the size of a couple of boxes of matches next to each other. In the light ring for Bugården Church, there are 352 printed panels," says Peter Okholm.
Additionally, Peter Okholm and his colleagues in a project like the light ring for Bugården Church also take color rendering and temperature into account:

"Here, a type of LED with high color rendering has been used. We often do this for projects with decorative purposes, where a lot of work is done to make it look good. The color temperature is 2700 Kelvin (K)," explains the director about the light, "which is a warm white color temperature that we associate with cozy, warm light in Scandinavia."
The very process of creating customized lighting varies from project to project—but there are elements that repeat. Among other things, the testing phase:

"When we produce a lamp, we fully assemble it ourselves so we can check that everything is as it should be. Then we disassemble it again and send it to the customer, where the installer reassembles it," explains Peter Okholm, who adds a fun detail from the Bugården project:
"We actually had to borrow a hall from Ecco Sko just around the corner. At that time, we didn't have space ourselves to install the light ring."
Why Choose a Customized Solution?

With a customized solution, you have the opportunity to realize precisely your unique idea for a lighting project.

"What’s great about customized lighting is that it’s often unique. It’s only made once, in one piece. You become very individual, and you want something that others don’t have, so with customized lighting, that opportunity arises," concludes Peter Okholm.
