ØRSLEV MONASTERY, HØJSLEV, DENMARK
Ørslev Monastery reopened in 2023 following a comprehensive renovation and restoration. The renovation was led by VMB Architects under the direction of Bruno Viuf Larsen. The architects worked closely with Janne Fruergaard Keyes and Garry Keyes to ensure that every renovation decision was made with respect for the monastery’s long history. Modern lighting technology was applied while maintaining the monastery’s historic atmosphere. Peter Okholm from Okholm Lighting contributed to creating lighting conditions that served both functional and aesthetic roles in harmony with the architectural spaces. By utilizing contemporary lighting technology, the rooms are now illuminated in a way that highlights the monastery’s architectural details without overpowering them, while also significantly reducing operational costs.
Garry Keyes states:
"We have achieved a varied lighting design that is carefully adapted to the different rooms and buildings. The lighting truly enhances each space and creates a unique ambiance. By using Okholm lighting as a consistent quality element throughout all buildings, we have created a very special warm atmosphere that is an integral part of the experience of staying at Ørslev Monastery—something distinct from home, something different and beautiful. It is something our guests have truly noticed and appreciate."
