A RENOVATION IN THE LIGHT OF HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE

Since 1969, Ørslev Kloster has been one of the Nordic region’s oldest and most esteemed work retreats, thanks to Countess Olga Sponneck, who saved it from demolition in 1934. In 2023, the monastery reopened after an extensive renovation that integrated modern technology with traditional craftsmanship to preserve its historical integrity. VMB Arkitekter, led by Bruno Viuf Larsen, oversaw the project in close collaboration with the estate managers, Janne Fruergaad Keys and Garry Keyes. The renovation was funded by major foundations such as the A.P. Møller Foundation and Realdania. During the process, archaeologists unearthed valuable artifacts, including an irreplaceable bishop’s ring. The renovation also featured modern lighting technology from Okholm Lighting, creating atmospheric illumination in harmony with the monastery’s architecture. The completed project has enhanced the monastery’s appeal as a venue for contemplation and creative work, while also reinforcing its cultural significance.
