LOUISENKIRCHE

LOUISENKIRCHE, GIERKEPLATZ, BERLIN, GERMANY

The large evangelical church in Berlin, located in the well-known Charlottenburg district, presents a challenge in terms of lighting due to its vast spaces. The church hall is used for many purposes, and the lighting must therefore not only contribute to the atmosphere of the space but also accommodate everything from religious ceremonies to concerts and meetings.

Architect J. Langenheinecke addressed this challenge with an interpretation of traditional chandeliers. Using a cohesive design language, he created ring chandeliers in various sizes. A large, two-tiered ring chandelier serves as the central lighting, supplemented by smaller 12-light ring chandeliers placed around the room.

All the lights are suspended as pendants on the ring chandeliers. With their transparent shielding, the light sources remain visible, while glare is significantly reduced. The shielding also acts as a diffuser, allowing the light to pass through softly.

The chandeliers are dimmable, and the composition—with the large central chandelier (Ø 350 cm) and the smaller ones in peripheral areas—creates an elegant and cohesive lighting solution for the expansive, high-ceilinged space.
